No. sda (hd0,0) is the the 10G drive and is the drive that the
jaunty-karmic network update was installed on.

No. I also took a pic of each screen using a digital camera during each
process, so I'm very sure that I did not select "free space" option.

Try this, if you don't mind; reinstall using the karmic beta liveCD over
one of your already installed karmic partitions to see if you get the
same results. If not then I can try via a partition vs overall hard
drive install & see if there is a difference.
