Have you tried putting your link(or script) in /etc/rc.local?
That file is executed at startup as root. Not sure that's what you want but it's worth a try as you can always remove it if it doesn't work using console.
I think you can remove splash from you kernel lines in grub2 but not the same way as in earlier versions.  It has been talked about since the beta release so look in ubuntu list archives for sept and oct.  Search for grub2 or just scan should find you what you want. Karmic has a file(s) in /etc/default/grub and grub.ucf-dist that allows you to change grub2 settings but I haven't used it so can't help you there. I woudld look in the doc files for some howto on changing grub settings in Karmic besides googling.  HTH
