Not at all surpring, since it isn't an Acer.  But thanks, David, for posting 
that, because it had never occurred to me that my Acer _does_ have such a 
key (I would never have guessed it was someone giving the touchpad the 
finger!).  Since I haven't been able to get udev to act when I plug in an 
external mouse, I've been manually running "synclient touchpadOff=1" every 
time I plug in a mouse.  fn-F7 works for me.
