fvwm (or fvwm2) handles "associating certain applications with certain
workspaces" all by itself, no need for any add-ons.  It's my preferred
window manager, sufficiently lightweight, works well with Ubuntu, easy
to configure (if your choice, like mine, is a straightforward text
file to do it), still being maintained, active support on the mailing
list.
