Why not just leave the OS you want to delete, and then install next OS in the
same partitions as where the OS to be deleted is sitting.
The main tools I use for my linux is:
Puppy linux for making backups of my partitions using the dd command.
gparted for manipulating partitions - now I use the version sitting in puppy
SGD Super Grub Disk for updating grub (English Super Grub disk - Advanced -
Grub - Restore Grub in MBR Harddisk - Automatic install)
It is a bit complicated what you want to do, because you thereafter has to
edit the "/boot/grub/menu.lst" which you make active when using SGD.
You have to know carefully which partition has the active menu.lst to be used.
Therefore make carefully copies of your /boot/grub/menu.lst file/files
Do not change the orden in which your partitions are sitting just now, because
it could give you problems later.
I have all my OS sitting as encrypted systems as a /boot partition of 100 mb
and / partition of 30 gb - no swap partitions at all.
When I do it like this I do not need to think so much of any directories,
which are separate partitions, changing size.
I am the author of www.minihowto.org, and there I have made som small howtos
about using gparted and puppy (they are a bit old, but I cannot cope with the
fast developement of the internet -and programs, as I am fairly old :-)
