Need to access files using UNC convention

Hi -- 
 
I have an application that evidently needs to be able to access files whose file 
names are in UNC format (e.g. //fire/work/filename).  When I try to access such 
a file I get an error message.  I gather that UNC is related to Microsoft's 
desire to sour the rest of us on the use of anything other than Microsoft 
software, but has anybody else ever had experience with a similar problem -- and 
solved it?
