I use a historic laptop Tecra8000 with 256M with gnome desktop.
The sound is not working at all after upgrade from 8.04 LTS.
I am currently on 9.04.
I have been fiddling around for days now using references like:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToSetupSoundCards
amongst others.

However, it occurs to me that version 9.xx is pulling the wrong driver,
namely WSS (?) instead of CS4231.

Both 8.04 LTS and 9.10 have the snd-cs4231 driver listed in:
/lib/modules/`uname -r`

The aplay -l produces this output:
/////////////////// aplay -l ///////////////////////////////////
/////////////////////////////// working (8.04) /////////////////
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: OPL3SA23 [Yamaha OPL3-SA23], device 0: CS4231 [Yamaha OPL3-SA23]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
/////////////////////////////// faulty (9.04) //////////////////
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: OPL3SA23 [Yamaha OPL3-SA23], device 0: WSS [Yamaha OPL3-SA23]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I would love if somebody could give me a bit of guidance, I am a bit
confused to say at least.
