If I'm wrong, somebody else please correct me, but I believe that the
reason your touchpad quit working is because you don't have the
synaptics touch-pad drivers for some reason, and you're not going to get
them w/o either the internet or a CD. I don't know how they disappeared,
or why they didn't install in the first place (if that was the case),
but I believe your only hope is either a CD, or brief internet access.
If you need a CD, you can order one for free from Ubuntu's shipit
service: https://shipit.ubuntu.com/ and have it shipped directly to you
at no cost.
Just out of curiosity though, how did you manage to get Ubuntu on your
laptop without a CD, or an internet connection? It's just an unusual
situation that most people on this list aren't accustomed to, so it's
lead to a lot of confusion, hostility, etc...
