Note that I said "before you try rebooting"... If the upgrade fails
(i.e. the upgrade process comes back with errors) and you don't reboot,
then your computer will still be fully usable. case-and-point, I ran my
computer for about a week w/o rebooting after I broke python on my
system doing something stupid, because I knew that if I rebooted, I
wouldn't get a GUI back.  Granted, this wasnt from an ubuntu
update...but it's the same principal. So, I just left my compy up for a
week while I researched how to fix it. It only ended up taking about an
hour to set right, and I learned some valuable linux lessons: aptitude
rocks, and don't use checkinstall to install new python versions.

He could also use a liveCD, but I completely forgot to mention that. My
bad.
