I have available a fully updated 8.04 which is working just
fine. What you need to do is run in a terminal lspci while in 8.04 and
report what it shows for a video pci hardware. Then we can better help
you with your video problem. Please also check out if your sound works.
I am on 10.04 now and it is a great version!
