I've had no problems at all with connecting my Canon's (or the new
Fujifilm S1800) to Ubuntu.

Do you get anything in dmesg or lsusb when you plug the usb cable in &
then turn on the camera?

$ dmesg | tail
$ lsusb

Try both: first without the usb plugged in & then with usb plugged in
and then turn on the camera.
