I find this issue (some packages not being installed, missing
dependencies etc) w/lucid generally happens when not all packages have
been build for all architectures. For example, on my 32bit machine
nearly all updates go well & pop right in. However, I then check my
64bit machine and find packages incomplete. For example I currently see
'samba-common' as being held back. samba-common updated just fine on the
32bit machine... so I look at:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3
and see:

Builds

Lucid: [BUILDING] amd64 [NEEDSBUILD] armel [FULLYBUILT] i386
[NEEDSBUILD] ia64 [NEEDSBUILD] powerpc [NEEDSBUILD] sparc

See; the i386 has been built, the rest are not. So we look at the build
status:
ttps://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3/+build/1684385

and see that the build started 12 minutes ago:
Build status
[BUILDING] Currently building on crested (amd64)
    * Started 12 minutes ago

This is probably why some folks say they have no problems, and others
run into issues. I had a similar issue awhile back where my 64bit lucid
was down for a day while waiting for a 64bit build. It really wasn't
Ubuntu's fault - I stupidly tried to force a package without the
dependency and screwed up the system myself. Had to wait until they
64bit build was completed the next day.
