Right, That's not really what I was looking for.  What that does is remove and replace existing page numbers as a part of the document.

Yes, this was the same article I had found, and it is - for me -  the right solution.  What I am trying to do is the digital equivalent of "stamping" numbers on each page.  In my day job, I am a lawyer and the normal practice is to give every document in a set a unique number.  In the old days we had a "Bates" ink stamper that indexed the the number with each strike.  (Actually, I still have mine and it works fine!)
