What is the best pdf editor for ubuntu?

Well, what I really meant was
"if you want to edit a pdf, use adobe acrobat"

But I didn't want to say it. That was the free, no cost cost issue :)


And when I wonder about PDF not being open, neither the software, I should
have said I think the software that produces *adobe* pdf format is not open.
It's the software that is open or not (true?). My mistake.

Still, about the PDF format, the adobe format, that is:

"On January 29, 2007, Adobe announced its intent to release the full
Portable Document Format (PDF) 1.7 specification to AIIM, the Enterprise
Content Management Association, for the purpose of publication by the
International Organization for Standardization (ISO). During 2007 and into
early 2008 that intent was turned into a reality. ISO published the approved
ISO 32000-1 standard based upon PDF 1.7 in July 2008. ISO will also produce
future versions of the PDF Specification.

Since ISO 32000 is equivalent to Adobe's PDF 1.7, Adobe is not producing a

Got it? I may be wrong, but I think the idea is that the standard is made
after the implementation. And adobe can write the ISO, but even so, the ISO
is based on, not the adobe implementation. Ya.


Other example that I may know more of: html/dom w3c standards and microsoft.


microsoft html/dom is not standard. They have functions/tags that are not in
the standards, it's not just a matter of interpretation, or lacking of
features.

Are they open, the microsoft versions? Not the question, probably. microsoft
software is not open. Are they standard? No. No matter how many
documentation microsoft produces about it.

microsoft don't care about standards unless they have to. Adobe is
different, they bought a standard. Too much?


The point was that today you can't have a successful linux pdf editor of
adobe documents unless, maybe, adobe makes it.
You may have a pdf cracker, pdfedit may be one of those. Sometimes it
breaks.

Because adobe didn't release the source of adobe acrobat, and I'll bet that
the format it produces is not standard. Not the latest version, not the
previous, not the next. It will always have a lot of non standard and
undocumented tweaks.
Again, may be wrong all the way, I don't know, its just an educated guess.

arshad: could you tell with what software did you create the pdf in
question, from the source you don't have at the moment? That was my other
point. Maybe it' s not an adobe pdf, that is.
