All that worked was cd ~karl/.gconf/ and then this happened:
karl at Lucid:~/.gconf/apps$ cd panel
karl at Lucid:~/.gconf/apps/panel$ cd global
bash: cd: global: No such file or directory
karl at Lucid:~/.gconf/apps/panel$ ls
applets %gconf.xml general objects toplevels
So it appears my 10.04 does not contain /.gconf/apps/panel/global.
