A laser would work better in that type of situation.  I just use mine
for my home, so the inkjet (since the ink is so cheap for this one)
works out fine for me.  I don't have as much experience with Linux and
Brother lasers.  You might take a look at this page:

There are three brscan versions and under each version is the list of
printers that is supported.  If you find a printer in any of those
lists it should be good.

I have used the MFC-8460N which is a B&W laser in an office type
setting and it has worked well.  I have used it in an office setting,
but just for printing, copying, and faxing.  It had held up really
well for those uses.  It is listed under the brscan2 list of
compatible printers, so I see no reason why it shouldn't work as well,
I just don't have first hand experience with it.
