a transfer with bittorrent would be very easy:
Start Transmission:
Applications -> Internet -> Transmission
Torrent -> New
Select File or Folder
add a tracker:
e.g.:
http://tracker.openbittorrent.com/announce
do not select "private tracker"
create the torrent
Add the torrent to transmission, and as download folder select the
folder where the original file/folder is located.
Transmission will detect the existing files, and will be ready to seed
the file to your friends.
Email the created torrent file to your friends the will have to add the
torrent to their bittorrent client.
If the don't have a bittorrent client installed (Windows) check out
deluge: http://deluge-torrent.org/ (there might be the need to restart
windows after the install of deluge)
if the don't have administrator privileges they may want to try:
http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/utorrent_portable (Not Free as in
Freedom)
Linux clients should have a bittorrent client installed.
It works like a charm + all Files are checked after the download.
In order to transfer the files the seeder and the leecher have to be
online at the same time. Contrary to conventional downloads it doesn't
matter if the transfer is interrupted.
If you want to transfer the file to several friends the usage of
bittorrent will speed up the transfer (if your friends start seeding, too).
If you have some secret documents to share you might want to create an
encrypted archive before creating the torrent.
