If you hit esc when the two little widgets are at the bottom of the
screen, you'll get a boot menu.

If you wait instead and read the screen that first opens up (like you
saw the first time you tried) you'd notice two buttons.  One on the
top says "Try without installing" or something like that, and the
bottom one says "Install Ubuntu"

It works as it should.
