Unable to modify task-bar in 10.04 UNR

Good afternoon,

I just finished installing 10.04 UNR on my Toshiba netbook. All seems to 
be well except for some reason I can't account for I'm completely unable 
to modify or delete the task bar in any way, shape, or form. I know 
Gnome-panel is installed and no errors during the install but for the 
life of me if I right click on an object in the task bar to delete it is 
greyed out. Booting into the standard Gnome or 2D desktop doesn't seem 
to be a problem but the main Netbook desktop is a bit of a problem. Any 
ideas or a work around? Your guidances would be most helpful to prevent 
me from losing what's left of my hair.
