Update:
Yesterday I flashed my BIOS with the latest version. and upgraded to
the new kernel (2.6.32-24.39) today.
I reset all boot parameters and /etc/pm/sleep.d to default (as installed).
I am monitoring temps with (hard drive and CPUs) with NoOp's suggested applet.
I rebooted, said a little prayer, and have an uptime now of almost five hours.
If that doesn't work, the last link NoOp gave:
http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/power/
is a gold mine for further research.
