Not sure you know this, but you can run gconf-editor, go to
apps>metacity>general, and on the right side, look for the item called
button_layout. There you can switch the buttons around a bit. I like to
put at least a spacer between the min/max buttons and the close button.
I don't do it often, but I have accidentally closed windows before.
