Linda,

On terminal you can use the commands: ifup or ifdown to take a network
interface up or down. You might check "man ifup" for specific
references. They are needed after editing /etc/network/interfaces.

Perhaps you should give another chance to NM or wicd, once correctly
configured they work like a charm...
