nvidia update ends with error

On Karmic with all updates.

Having so many problems with graphics on my 'pute' I thought I'd check 
to see if there is any kind of update available. I have the standard 
repos plus a good few others, but nothing has come through for nvidia 
for ages. My system says the most uptodate driver is installed, i.e. 
the 185 driver, yet there has been a 190 and 195 since. 

So I found http://ubuntuupdates.org/ppas/5, and did 

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nvidia-vdpau/ppa 
  sudo aptitude update

The repository was added and there are now updates showing for a 
number of packages including nvidia ones. So I then went to Synaptic 
(my preferred SM) and chose to do the updates. That proceeded until 
this error was encountered during the processing part.

As I generally have to reset my machine several times a day on Karmic 
(man am I paying for my past misdeeds LOL) I don't know if it is 
entirely broken (to me that is won't boot). I don't know what to say, 
or actually even ask for. Is help the right word?
