the new Thunderbird 3 and Gmail

When using Gmail with Tbird 3, how do I handle mailing list by creating
a filter for the list?

Thunderbird 3 is somewhat confusing with all the folders it shows when
using gmail.

Inbox (15)
	myemail at address.net
Drafts
	my email again
+Sent
+Archives(17)
  Spam
  Trash
	Myemail again!
	Local Folders
  Outbox
-my email folder yet again!!!
	+Gmail
	 Personal
	 Receipts
	 Travel
	 Work

How do I make sense of it all???  I use Gmail and Thunderbird 3 in
Windows and was thinking about setting up Tbird 3 in Linux.  But I am
confused about all the new directory structure.
