Could you please provide the exact error message being displayed? That
would be far more helpful for diagnosing the problem.
Also, something else you can try, since it's apparently complaining
about a missing window manager, is to reinstall the ubuntu-desktop
package. From a terminal [Applications > Accessories > Terminal, or ctrl
+alt+F(1-6) ] try the following:
sudo apt-get install reinstall ubuntu-desktop
If any packages have gone missing for some reason, that operation should
pull in anything that is missing, and reinstall it. If that doesn't work
though, then the actual error message you're being presented with would
be more helpful.
