Java not working in Firefox 3.6

My first attempt was with ~/.mozilla/plugins but it did not work.  I 
tried ~/firefox/plugins because it was there and on the 32bit machine it 
did work. At that time I was focused more on paths and not 64 vs 32 bit 
issues.  I just tried ~/.mozilla/plugins again and according to 
about:plugins the java plugin is not loaded. One benifit of all this is 
that I am now more comfortable using the terminal.

OK, I'll try that one, but I'm not ready to give up on 3.6 yet.  Just 
stubbron I guess, but the fact that 3.5.7 runs makes me wonder why I 
can't get 3.6 to work.

I used to use Seamonkey and liked it on another platform.  Problem was 
my ISP and bank complained about an unsupported browser. I got tired of 
clearing pop up warnings and just switched to Firefox.  Just last week I 
  got an email from my bank saying that IE and Firefox were the ONLY 
browsers that could use the site.
