In this case, if your grub menu isn't showing on boot, just hit the Esc
key at boot. You should then see the recovery mode kernel. Select that,
& it will take a little longer to boot w/lots of msgs on the screen.
You'll then get a DOS like screen with the options for 'Repair Broken
Packages' etc. Best way to do learn is to go and try it _before_ you
update the kernel, that way you'll be familiar with the procedure.
