Thanks, guys. I have downloaded and burned several times, on different computers (one linux and one win). I got several bad burns, a variety of errors in different places. I have pretty much convinced myself that my cd reader/writer is bonkers and needs replacing. I only use it for ubuntu upgrades, so maybe it just rotted from no use.
