As far as I can tell, when no 32-bit binary's available, you just get
the 32-bit one automagically. I can't see a visible difference.

Yes it does but results may not be perfect. E.g. on my 32-bit Ubuntu
10 machine, Spotify plays flawlessly under WINE; on my 64-bit one,
sound crackles, pops & then dies after 2min, never to return. But of
course this may be due to other hardware differences!
