You should try booting from the CD again.
What is the name of the ISO file you downloaded? And from where did you get
it?
The Ubuntu ISO files are either direct installers (alternate/server) or
try+install. The try version DOES NOT ask for login/password information.
Maybe (buit I don't think that's the case) if you happen to kill the X
session you get thrown back to a GDM by mistake, but rebooting the live CD
should bring you back into the GNOME environment.
