resume from suspend oa Thinkpad edge 13

Hullo there.

I have a ThinkPad Edge 13 (Intel Core2 Duo). It's a low-end Lenovo
model. I have installed 10.04 on it, done a full update/upgrade cycle,
and just about everything works well. The two exceptions are sound and
suspend to RAM. Sound I have fixed with help from Google.

Suspend has two problems:

- there does not appear to be a key sequence to initiate suspend. I have
to be logged in, and select "suspend" from the task bar. This is more an
irritant than anything else, but perhaps I just haven't figured out the
right key combination.

- it appears to suspend successfully, and a red LED flashes slowly to
tell me so. However, when I press the FN key to wake the machine up,
nothing happens except that after a second the fan starts up. The screen
stays off (not just dark - OFF) and the red LED keeps flashing slowly.
This state persists until I give up and hold down the power button to
switch it off for real.

Google doesn't throw up any obvious solutions, though there are many
reports of failures to resume from suspend, they don't seem to relate to
this hardware. There is a suggestion that "noapic" might help. Dunno why
it would, but I tried it anyway :-) and it did not help.

I have found a couple of web pages that say suspend/resume works fine,
but they are using Kubuntu (I'm using standard Ubuntu 10.04) and the
hardware in both cases was AMD rather than Intel.

Anyone have any ideas?

Regards, K.

PS: Hibernate and resume from hibernate both work fine...
