places: / vs. File System

I've just upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04.   Among the differences that 
confuse me is the difference in the "Places" menu between "/" and "File 
System".  Both bring up a File Browser, with mostly the same 
directories, but with different contents.  I have always assumed that 
there was only one directory tree in Linux, so this difference in 
contents confuses me.  Can someone please clarify this for me?
