Using 9.10 here, and I find that Rhythmbox respects the GNOME proxy
setting regardless of how it is launched. Could you confirm what
connections Rhytmbox is making, e.g., by running the command
watch netstat -tp
while Rythmbox is connecting? Also, please check whether your terminal
has the http_proxy environment variable set.
