Upgrade to 2.6.31.20 on dual-boot laptops doesn't work

It sounds as if the kernel updates did not complete properly.
What versions of grub do you have on the sytems?

On 1, is it freezing, or are you able to edit?
On 2, try the recovery mode and select the dpkg/'Repair broken packages'
fix. Afterwards, also run the grub/'Update grub bootloader'.
