Can you trace the freezing to any specific action or is it totally
random as far as you can tell.
When the desktop freezes, can you switch to another terminal
(CTRL-ALT-F1 through to F6)? If you can, log in to your normal user and
run a top (or even better htop) command and note anything which is using
a lot of CPU. Using "SortBy CPU% will be useful. F6 is SortBy.
If you can get into another terminal, having a look at the contents (and
even better, posting the last 40 lines or so on pastebin and popping a
URL here to it) of /var/log/syslog will be most useful.
If your machine really is locking up quite hard, using the sysreq keys
to attempt as clean a shutdown as possible will be useful. Information
