Not tried, but in an german magazin I read you can do it using the tool
gconf-editor. In the tree you choose apps->metacity->general. Here you
change the entry button_layout to "menu:minimize,maximize,close". Using
this value you will get the menue on the left of the titlebare. On the
right will be first the button to minimize, then the button to maximize
at then the button to close.
