Did you check the motherboard temperatures? It may be overheating. Did
you overclock the CPU/graphics card?

Haven't checked the motherboard temperatures but would not think that would be a problem as
I can start from cold and install a live OS, e.g. Knoppix 6.2, Ubuntu 9.04, Suse 11.2, Linux Mint 7 or 8, but as soon as I try to use Open Office or Firefox the screen freezes.

No! I haven't overclocked the graphics card.

Which brand is the GPU (e.g. NVIDIA)?

Don't know what chip the graphics card uses. All I know is that it is a basic ASUS card
which just supports VGA connection. Seems to work OK with GOS and WIN XP.

You may check System::Administration::Hardware Drivers.

Did that. It's driver wasn't enabled so I enabled it in GOS but that didn't make any difference to GOS.

How would one enable it with another OS if there's a problem with installation?
