ubuntu-tweak

My guess would be that *most* ubuntu users aren't noobs. While that
doesn't make it as easy for noobs to get used to the system it does
prevent the rest of us from spending the time purging those packages
right after a clean install. It might be worth while for the ubuntu
team to put together an ubuntu-noob virtual package (or something like
it) which installs all these "helpful" packages and tell people about it
on the download site. The other alternative would be to assemble a
"noob" iso in addition to the standard iso.
MOTS...I'm glad it's not included in the base install but I agree there
could be ways to make a base install more accessible to noobs (and who
among us doesn't remember when we were at that stage).
Those are my ramblings...take them for what they're worth.
