Plantronics 655 headset's volume controls issue on Ubuntu 9.10

The Plantronics Audio 655 USB headset does act just as you said, on my
computer also. I have no problem as long as I do not touch the volume
control on the headset. Just control the volume using the Gnome sound
applet on the taskbar at the top of your screen.
[Note: when using the headset, be sure to select it and to deselect other
sound output entries in the Sound Preference -> Hardware tab of the Gnome
sound applet, or your computer may be confused and the go crazy, until you
reboot.]
Any reason not to just ignore the on-headset volume control?
