You did not remove all the Gnome things installed with the ubuntu CD.

Really remove 'libgnome*' and 'gnome*' (that could drive to a X less
system) then install: 
- slim (display manager, select it as default)
- xubuntu-desktop
- claws-mail
- epiphany-browser

Remove: 
- GDM
- firefox
- thunderbird
- xulrunner-*

Now reboot and compare
