Smarmontools is useful for monitoring drives that support SMART. If you 
have a server board, it might support IPMI, in which case I think there 
are tools for that. However, the tools won't necessarily detect 
spontaneous hardware problems, like defective capacitors. Certain 
components, like disk drives, can give you fair warning before failure 
but that's not always possible.
