Huawei E169 USB and GPRS

Hello *,

I've a Huawei GPRS/UMTS dongle, lsusb sees it as

Bus 007 Device 005: ID 12d1:1001 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E620 USB
Modem

Since last year it used to work on my old Ubuntu 9.04. Then my notebook
broke up, I bought another one and now I've problems with Ubuntu 10.04.
I've tried to connect yesterday in a downtown area with good umts signal and
it worked like a charm. Today I'm back again in my rural village where we
have only GSM (= GPRS) signal. I'm sure there's GSM because the same SIM
card in my cellphone works. However I can't get Ubuntu to connect, neither
using NetworkManager nor umtsmon 10 alpha2, and neither one gives me any
useful error message. I've already tried to set radio preferences in umtsom
to "GPRS/EDGE preferred", but nothing changed.

Any clue?
