Clone HD from broken FakeRAID

Hi

I would like to clone the 2 HD's (80GB each) from a Box which just died.
The 2 HD's were connected in a RAID-1 configuration with a "Promise
FastTrak 578" onboard (MB) controller. As RAID-1 is mirroring, I just
took one HD and copied the whole HD with dd to a new one in the new PC.
But I could not boot....

After some research on Google, I found out that this kind of RAID array
can only work with the "FakeRAID" HW controller. Googeling some hours
more, I found the dmraid software, which should be able to access the
RAID array. After some more research, I did not find out if it is needed
to connect the 2 HD's the same way (Same RAID controller or what ever...).

I would like to "dd" the 2 HD's onto the 500GB disk I have and do dmraid
its work on this copies of the 2 HD's (loop mount? or can dmraid work on
disk images?,).

I access this 2 HD's with a IDE-USB adapter connected to my Ubuntu
Machine (10.04).

Anybody out there who had the same problem and can guide me?

Thomas
