Thanks Nils. That fixed the problem.
I must have set the ip address manually last year when I was trying to 
configure Ubuntu so that Win XP, installed in Virtual Box, could use the 
printer. Never did get it to, as I don't know much about networking.
Although the internet connection now works automatically I note that the 
run-applet shows only manual connection so obviously I have added 
something last year which has deleted the other options that should show 
when the applet is clicked is clicked.
