getting heavily into multimedia on ubuntu, how to start?

  actually, i checked that list earlier this morning, but there's
nothing there devoted strictly to multimedia, and since i'm not
specifically using the ubuntu studio distro, asking on that list
doesn't seem appropriate.

  in any event, i have enough to keep me going for a while.
