Many thanks, NoOp, for your advice.

I've had a quick look at the three links you provided and they seem 
promising. I'll study them later today.

Incidentally, I have looked at the mailing lists/forums of several 
distros. Every one has many postings saying that their HP printer or 
printer/scanner worked perfectly with older versions of the distro (with 
the exception of Ubuntu 9.10!), but won't work with the latest version. 
So it seems to be a general recent HP problem, not just one confined to 
Ubuntu.
