No. I think of /var as part of the root, like /tmp and so on.
Another option is to keep an exact copy of your root partition in a
separate partition so you can easily (or at least with less
difficulty) back up if a change doesn't work quite right. I did that
with my CentOS root, but it's long gone now.
There are points where it doesn't make sense any more just to update
or even upgrade, and then a separate root partition for the new system
makes more sense. That way your old settings are still available for
integration, if you so desire.
