If Ubuntu's GNOME edition is too slow or unresponsive, Fedora's GNOME
edition will be too.
You should check whether the LXDE editions suit you better. The
downside with Fedora is that installing any proprietary drivers is
more involved should you need any.
Mint also has a Fluxbox edition shold you want to try something even
lighter than LXDE but don't want to build it up yourself.
You could also try Meego ( http://meego.com/downloads ) - never tried
it myself but it is designed for netbooks and might be more responsive
than Unity.
