Help upgrading to 10.10

Hi,
    I'm trying to upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10, and my 10.04 is totally up to date.     I went to 
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MaverickUpgrades and read the instructions. My problem is that I'd like to do it from the command line because when I go to system/administration/software and I enter my sudo password the desktop locks up. This keeps happening even after multiple reboots. I even tried stopping Orca and having a sighted person try it, but same results.I'm blind and prefer the command line. Does anyone have a link that tells you how to do it from the command-line. Short of that does anyone have any idea why it might keep locking up like this?
