11.04 32-bit to 64-bit

Hi folks
Currently I'm enjoying Alpha of the above and will move to Beta-1 this weekend.
I running 32-bit now but wish to install 64.  My Sony is 64 and has a max ram of 2 gig. So 2 questions

1. Would I really gain much by moving to 64-bit?

2. Are there about as many packages for 64 as there are for 32? If not, ought the 32 bit packages run under the 64 bit install?
